Italian manufacturers popularized knit shirts with wide collars and tapered slacks. Corsets were advertised and sold in waist sizes ranging from 18 to 30 in (46 to 76 cm), and the laces usually provided another 1 to 2 in (2 to 5 cm) in back. These ads attempt to establish candidate name identification, create a favorable image of the candidate and a negative image of the opponent, link the candidate with desirable groups in the community, and communicate the candidate's stands on selected issues.

A multitude of minute distinctions identified a man's position in the class structure. His men's jackets, for example, included bold patterns and unorthodox fastenings, such as corset lacing and multiple zippers. Ornate garments encrusted with jewels, gold, and other decoration asserted her power and her right to rule, even though she was a woman.

California sportswear designers were largely responsible for the success of western clothes, an american innovation. Other items of apparel frowned upon after the french revolution were powdered wigs, high-heeled shoes (worn by men and women), embroidered waistcoats, and other aristocratic fashions of the earlier 18th century.
